(Part 2 – Green Goblin) intervista in inglese su goblin Spoiler! --Clicca per mostrare--What did you do to capture Green Goblin’s look? Bryan Shutt, Art Director: We wanted something true to the comics, but also something a bit more menacing than what you’d expect for a comic book game. We were trying to get a look that evoked what Marvel was doing with the character: familiar, but unsettling, with an undertone of dangerous unpredictability and malice. Dave Phillips (concept artist) created a beautiful head study which really set the tone for what we were trying to capture. I just love that evil smirk. The main source of costume design inspiration came from Marko Djurdjevic’s Thunderbolts covers – #110, #114 and #121. They were classic Goblin, but also very scary. We thought the pointed scale armor and stringy tattered cloth had a homemade authenticity about it. We also liked the hand-stitched look of his cap with the oversized threading and we tried to capture that in the details of the model. The biggest pitfall we could have made with Goblin was just playing him as goofy comic relief. That’s not him: he’s crazed, but also very, very dangerous. What about Green Goblin makes him an interesting character to animate? Adam Olshan, Senior Animator: That face. As soon as the model arrived and skinning was complete, everyone wanted a crack at animating Goblin’s face. It’s immediately expressive, it just wants to move. I came in one day and found that one of the animators had gone ahead and put a wicked grin on his idle animation without anyone knowing. Goblin’s persona made him interesting to pose and animate. You know he’s crazy, you know he’s sneaky and sinister… you just want to pose him out. Steve Vanseth, Animator: There are actually a lot of factors that make Green Goblin an interesting character to animate. First of all he’s new to the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance lineup, so that gave us the opportunity to create a lot of cool animations that are unique to him. Second, he’s a great-looking character with a lot of details like his hat and cloth. Those details in his model make it much easier to give him a lot of personality. Lastly, he has a unique piece of equipment… his glider! Although the glider adds a lot of extra challenges to the animation, it made him a lot of fun to animate, especially for his fusions. Did you hate animating all that cloth? There’s a rumor out there that animators hate cloth. Adam: Actually, the cloth wasn’t so bad for Goblin. Some of it’s procedurally driven, and one of our Tech Animators set up some nice simple controls for those bits which aren’t. Besides, animators love to throw in some overlapping action. What sort of fighting styles did you reference for him? For Goblin, we didn’t approach hand-to-hand fighting styles in the same way we did other characters, such as Iron Fist or Deadpool. His glider and assortment of pumpkin bombs separate him from other hand-to-hand fighters. We always thought of him as a squirrelly fighter, delivering quick swipes and painful jabs, but ultimately relying heavily on his arsenal to deliver the pain. Green Goblin seems to be much more of a “classic monster” than other comic villains (heck, “goblin” is in the name). Did this influence you at all? In folklore, goblins are mischievous creatures. It was easy and fun to assign that personality to Goblin, even without the wealth of comic inspiration and the great writing from years of Marvel comics, and the adaptation from our Narrative team. Green Goblin should be having fun while he’s destroying the level. He’s the guy leaving a flaming bag of dog poop on your doorstep. But in his case, the flaming bag of dog poop will probably blow up your house. So what can you tell us about his Goblin Glider? Steve: His glider is really cool and it’s something that separates him from the rest of the playable characters! The glider has always been a part of his design, even from the concept stage. Once we started working on him we wanted to make sure we incorporated the glider as a part of his character and not just something that was tacked on as an afterthought. The majority of his powers and fusions use the glider in some way and it makes him really fun to play. One thing that’s great about his fusions is that we weren’t as limited to what the glider could do or where it could go. Goblin hops on his glider and really feels like he’s connected to it and that he has control of it, which was a big concern with the animation. We always wanted to make sure it looks like he is in control of the glider and not the other way around. Adam: Goblin’s glider is pretty slick. It’s not only a source of locomotion for Goblin, but it also plays an integral role in some of his powers and fusion attacks. The team wanted to make sure the glider was tied to Goblin in such a way that he could call upon it to wreak havoc at any moment. Early on, one of our engineers was toying with an idea for a different kind of glider attack. I won’t say he ‘stumbled upon’ unique functionality, but it definitely wasn’t planned. I can’t say too much about it, but Goblin’s glider attacks certainly set him apart from the other characters in our game. I should also mention that Goblin’s glider developed a mind of its own at one point. The glider was supposed to fly off after one of Goblin’s moves. Instead, it just decided to fly up and hover somewhere above Goblin’s head, spinning around and dipping back and forth. We only knew it was there because its shadow was on the ground, following Goblin wherever he went. Eventually we fixed the bug, but for awhile, we just couldn’t get it to leave. Bryan: We wanted to stray a bit from the classic glider look seen in the comics where the shape tries to emulate a flying bat. Most of those designs look very flat and simple like they were made of stamped sheet metal. It’s fun, but we wanted something much more formidable and aerodynamic looking, so we updated the design. The first thing we noticed about the classic design was that there was no obvious mechanism for hovering, only lift from forward thrust. We knew that our glider was going to have to hover in place for certain moves so Dave created turbofans on the wings. Aesthetically, the back halves of the wings resemble giant pocketknife blades. Overall it’s pretty lethal looking and has a lot more tech-factor. Regarding animation, we’ve heard about the glider bug. Did Green Goblin give you any other trouble? Adam: Yes. Though it was completely worth it, Goblin’s glider posed a significant challenge. As part of both his traversal and combat, it had the capacity to complicate… well, virtually everything. The whole Powers team of animators, engineers and designers worked together to push through the issues. “Cool + fun” always wins out over “difficult”, and Goblin is a blast to play as a result. Justin Heisler, Fusion Designer Unlike most of the other playables, Goblin’s heavily equipment-based, which makes sense, since Norman Osborne was an industrialist and an inventor. That equipment fed heavily into his fusions and powers. It was really fun to implement fusions with Goblin: He had such an arsenal of tech devices at his disposal that it was difficult to only pick a few of them! In several moves he uses standard goblin devices such as his pumpkin bombs and homing bombs. However he also uses his glider to its full extent. It fires missiles, rockets, grappling hooks and even a flamethrower. That’s one of the best parts of playing him – you always feel like you have a trick up your sleeve. Jay Twining, System Designer Since his beginning we knew how Green Goblin had to fit in our roster, and there were key aspects to his character that we REALLY needed to exploit. Let me assure the fans, we nailed it. Pumpkin bombs. Gliders. A crazy man’s laugh. Mayhem, panic with a bow on top. We needed someone iconic that could wade into combat, trade blows with the big dudes or hang back and bomb from afar. He excels no matter who you use him with. Being the master strategist that is the Green Goblin, I think the fans will have a blast with this one. Adam: We also made sure to insert little “personality signatures” wherever we could. e also use a similar philosophy with the moves themselves: One of his Glider attacks was designed with a long “cool-down,” so while his vehicle’s going to work, we used the time to make Goblin cackle maniacally. After we showed that move to the rest of the company, someone told me they’d read a line on a message board that said something like “If Green Goblin’s in the game, all I want is a button for Pumpkin Bombs, and button that makes him cackle. If they have those, I’m buying it.”
